Carol Vernallis's Theory

Carol Vernallis had analysed the editing skills in a music video and has came to a theory that music video edits would be totally different because they would be edited towards the rhythm of a song. theses are some of the aspects of a music video that would be included and seen through out.

  • there would be obvious edits done on the singer or band in the video to draw the attention of the audience for example, different lighting, flashing lights and special effects.
  • the camera shots would be shot according to a specific beat or sound in the song.
  • there would be several base tracks in the song to give the video a meaning.
  • there would be repetition of similar shots, jump shots, cut shots, tracking, panning and more.
for example this music video by; August Alsina - Numb (Explicit) ft. B.o.B, Yo Gotti, is a perfect example of the aspects above;

this video has good use of the different lighting effects included to stand out the main artist that is singing. there is a lot of slow motion of the women dancing and  fighting. this is to show every fine detail of the female figure to draw the attention of the music video and artust.

another good example is this music video by; August Alsina- no love ft Niki Minaj;

this is another good example of Vernallis's theory, there is a good use of base tracks in the video that make a slight story according to the songs rhythm and the shots suit the song for example when the artists says "couple drinks with me" theres a shot of a bottle of alcohol and the artist in the background.
