I realise that this probably isn't a very useful time to upload a little analysis of a music video, but it was only recently released and I think it's really interesting for a number of reasons.
I think foremost that Sia is a great addition to the pop world. She used to be a song writer of massive pop anthems; she wrote Diamonds by Rihanna, Pretty Hurts by Beyonce and loads more (theres a list here), before releasing her powerhouse track Chandelier. Aesthetically this piece is incredible. It uses a wonderful colour scheme that is mirrored by the single cage and lack of anything apart from them. The video has acquired some strange controversy, some labelling it pedophilloic because they're both wearing skin coloured outfits and dancing. Thats stupid so i'm not going to talk about it. There are two theories which I gained, the later which i thought whilst watching it and the first i found from a comment on the video. "the little girl clearly represents old Sia and her bad habits and Sia represents her new self, strong but still holding onto her old self, fighting to not become her again, and maybe even falling back into her old ways at times. In the end she just can’t let go of her past even if it’s wrong.” I had a pretty similar reading of the video, but instead of the child being an old self that she was trying to escape, they were acting as the heart and the mind. The lyric read “I’ve got thick skin and an elastic heart”. Her thick skin is personified as Shia LaBeouf, who is aged and withered and is the anchor to her "elastic heart", the young and niave figure. They are contained in a cage, originally fighting against each other as the heart tries to leave the restrictions placed on her by the cage, but eventually they cannot fight against each other and chooses to settle.
I think that it a very interesting (and positive) development in pop music, especially compared to the generic shit that is everywhere. Props to Sia for putting such an artful piece into mainstream media.
